A study in the US claims to have discovered a form of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that can effectively kill the virus that causes COVID-19.
According to scientists, this form of UV radiation is safer to use around human beings and this finding might be able to help in developing a potential disinfection system for occupied public places.
The study was published in the American Journal of Infection Control. It suggests that Ultraviolet-C (UVC) light with a wavelength of 222 nanometeres (nm) can kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus, without penetrating the human skin.
Earlier, researchers from the Hiroshima University in Japan had studied the same in eradicating seasonal coronaviruses that are structurally similar to the novel coronavirus but not on SARS-CoV-2 itself.
"Recent studies have shown that 222-nm UVC is less harmful than 254-nm UVC because far-UVC light has a very limited penetration depth in the skin or eyes, and it is also an efficient anti-microbial technology," the study said.Indiatimes.
